Morning Sickness Remedies

Why are these medicines any different than others that I have seen advertised on the Internet?
There are thousands of remedies for morning sickness offered in stores and on the Internet. Only doxylamine and vitamin B6 has been classified by the FDA as safe and effective for the nausea and vomiting of pregnancy and is recommended as the treatment of choice by ACOG, the American College Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Another medication, promethazine, may be effective as a second choice by ACOG. Kids'n Cures has been compounding Promethazine in PLO gel for 7 years at our Boardman, Ohio location. When the new ACOG guidelines came out we started to make Doxylamine and Pyridoxine in PLO gel. Our area OB/GYN doctors have found that these medications have been effective in helping to control morning sickness in many of their patients.

Why put medicine in PLO gel?
Simply put, when you are nauseas anything, including medicine, taken orally can come right back up. Putting medicine in PLO and massaging it into the skin is a convenient way to deliver medication when nausea is involved. The last thing that you need when you are nauseas is to have to swallow and hold down a tablet or capsule. PLO gel allows the medicine to be applied on the skin (how to apply PLO gel). The medicine passes through the skin and into the bloodstream-nothing to swallow and cause more stomach upset. Patients who have used these medications in PLO started to experience relief in as little as five minutes and that relief lasted from four to eight hours, enough time to get through the worst part of the day.

How often do I have to apply the contents of the syringe?
In the seven-plus years we have dispensed morning sickness medications in PLO gel we have found that sometimes one dose a day can be enough. It all depends on the time of day when the nausea occurs and how sick you are. Less is more when medicine and pregnancy are concerned, so it is a judgment call between you and your physician. Doxylamine and Pyridoxine can be dosed up to three times a day and Promethazine can be dosed up to four times a day.

Why do I need a prescription?
Since there are no commercial manufacturers of Doxylamine/Pyridoxine in PLO Gel or Promethazine in PLO Gel, these medicines must be compounded from chemical ingredients. For that reason Federal regulations require a prescription for both of these medications. These products are real medicine and real medicine requires a prescription. Your prescription is easy to fill in a few steps; it is shipped free and may be covered by insurance.
